What Are Root Planing and Scaling?

Root planing and scaling are deep cleaning procedures used to treat and prevent gum disease, particularly chronic periodontal disease. These non-surgical procedures are typically performed by a dental hygienist or dentist and involve cleaning between the gums and teeth down to the roots.

    1. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gums. It can be performed using manual hand instruments, ultrasonic instruments, or both. The ultrasonic instrument uses vibrations to break up tartar and plaque, which are then washed away with water.
    2. Root planing goes a step further to smooth out your teeth roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth. Scaling and root planing help to remove the bacteria that contribute to gum disease and the toxins they produce, which can cause inflammation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Scaling and Root Planing Work?

On your first visit to the clinic dentist Boris Lipovetskiy will closely inspect your teeth. If you have a periodontal disease, your dentist may recommend cost effective scaling and root planing, which involves the following steps:

    1. Receive a local anesthetic - You won’t feel any discomfort during the scaling and root planing treatment.
    2. Your dentist uses an ultrasonic scaler - This device has a metal tip that chips away the tartar on your teeth.
    3. Your dentist uses a scraper - This manual scraper removes little bits of tartar that the scaler can’t get to you.
    4. Your mouth and teeth are flushed with a water spray - The water spray helps dislodge tartar and plaque.
    5. Your gums are moved away, exposing your teeth roots - Then your dentist will use the same tools to remove tartar and plaque from your teeth roots.

The root planing and scaling procedure can take between 1 and 4 hours. Your dentist will start with one quadrant of your mouth and then move to the next. The procedure may be split up into multiple appointments.

Is Scaling and Root Planing Painful?

Scaling and root planing treatment is not painful at all. This is because you will be administered a numbing agent ensuring you don’t feel a thing. This treatment can also be performed with a local anesthetic, but it can result in some moderate pain if you choose this option.

Following the procedure, it is not normal to experience some increased sensitivity, particularly when drinking hot and cold liquids. You may also experience some mild pain and discomfort in the gums around your teeth.

How Much Does Scaling and Root Planing Cost?

The cost for scaling and root planing is around $300 per quadrant. The cost of scaling and root planing all of your teeth is over $1,000. Your dentist will advise whether or not you need all of your teeth scaled and root planed. As this is a medically necessary treatment, this procedure is typically covered by dental insurance. Your insurance should cover 50% or more of the cost.

This review is really for dental hygienist Natalia. For a long time I neglected my dental health at first due to a lack of insurance, then because it had been so long I was embarrassed to go, which created a vicious cycle. I did not want to be chastised or given less than care due to my carelessness. I decided to commit to better oral health and was hoping I wouldn’t have to go through multiple offices to find the right dentist for me.  I decided to check out advanced dental wellness and I’m very glad I did. I’ve gotten a consult and a deep cleaning so far. The Doctor was pleasant and seems knowledgeable so far my time with him was at the consultation, looking forward to working with him on my future procedures. However, the absolute star and gem of the office is dental hygienist Natalia. She is warm, gentle, non judgmental and a total professional. She took her time to thoroughly give me a better care plan and made sure repeatedly I was comfortable. Having her encouragement and positive attitude means more than she can imagine, I’ve always been very intimidated by the dentists office but she has me excited to be on this journey. Thank you so so much to her. This office could really not have a better employee, I hope she is cherished. The rest of the staff is very courteous, efficient, and they greet you by name. Would recommend 10/10
